CSS Sticky Positioning

Return to CSS Positioning Index

    Sticky Position
  • Hybrid between Relative and Fixed positioning.
  • Element starts as relative positioned until a threshold
(such s a top or bottom assignment) is met.
  • One the threshold is met, it becomes a fixed element,
which is fixed to the viewport at the specified location.
  • Sticky will switch back and forth between Fixed and
Relative based on the scroll position.
  • You must specify Top, Bottom, Left or Right for
    Sticky Positioning to work.

    When to use
  • Headers that scroll with content then stay fixed at top.
  • Sidebar ads/info panels moving with scroll, remaining visible.
  • Long content pages, retaining elements in user focus during scroll.

    Important Rules
  • Sticky elements may overlap, use with care.
  • Don't forget to set the threshold (eg. top: 10px;).
  • May not work on older browsers, so provide a
    fallback positioning for unsupported browsers..
